Exhibitor Notes & Boxoffice Estimate - CYRANO (PG13)

Published Jan. 12, 2022

Synopsis

Distributor: United Artists Releasing | Release Date: 2/25/22 | Run Time: 124 Minutes

Cyrano recounts the love triangle between French Army officer Cyrano (Dinklage), Roxanne, and new cadet Christian. But because of Cyrano’s diminutive stature (replacing the customary oversized nose), he’s afraid to declare his love for Roxanne, who pines for Christian, so he helps the cadet woo her by writing love letters for him.

Screening Notes

Cyrano is a beautiful film. Had it been released in Q4, we would now be whirling in the buzz of Peter Dinklage being the leading contender for this year's Oscar for Best Actor; he just as forceful of an onscreen presence as he was as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones!

The film is an enjoyable adaptation of the 1897 Cyrano de Bergerac play, with Cyrano's large nose replaced by Dinklage's 4' 5" height. Surprisingly, the film is also part musical...not a one of the characters has a very good voice but the lyrics are fun and in a strange way, their poor vocals actually really works.

Sadly, as delightful as the film is, it will struggle to find a broad commercial audience and I believe United Artists will be challenged to land on a compelling marketing plan. This film will enjoy a wonderful run within the art house and specialty theatre circuits but will be a non-event in the average megaplex...which is too bad. Overall, I believe the film will play very similar to Emma, which opened on a handful of screens, eventually expanded to 1,700 screens and ended up generating 42.9x opening weekend multiple.

Boxoffice Estimate

My best guess, Cyrano will open to around $2M...maybe as high as $4M. My exact estimate is the film opens to $2.5M and goes on to generate $11.1M --- the film will have to work hard, but it can go on to achieve a relatively healthy 4.4x opening weekend multiple.
