Screening Notes
David is a last-minute but welcome surprise on the holiday release calendar. The animation delivers far more than expected, polished in a way typically associated with Disney or Universal, and the musical side is anchored by several legitimately catchy songs. While the film carries faith-based undertones (it is after all the story of David and Goliath), it does so with a light touch and since it’s the Christmas season, will work well with audiences looking for family-friendly, feel-good content.
Boxoffice Estimate
Angel Studios’ brand consistency is a major asset. The studio has developed a remarkable track record of delivering films that resonate with audiences, regularly earning RT Audience scores of 95% or higher. Earlier this year, their animated King of Kings opened around Easter and delivered a $19M weekend—the second-largest opening for Angel behind Sound of Freedom. David definitely has the potential to rival King of Kings, particularly given its prime release date leading directly into Christmas and New Year’s. With so few animated titles in the holiday window—Zootopia 2 at Thanksgiving and SpongeBob Movie also opening December 19—David should find a clear lane to compete for family attention well into January.
Internal modeling suggests a $17M opening weekend, with a range between $15M and $18M. Positive word-of-mouth, the Christmas theming, and family-friendly genre should carry the title deep into January, delivering an estimated 3.8x multiple and a domestic total in the $58M to $70M range…it will rank as Angels’ 3rd highest opening weekend title, that could easily over-index and slip into 2nd place.
