Exhibitor Notes & Boxoffice Estimate - WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING (PG13)

Published Jun 30, 2022

Synopsis

Distributed by: Sony Pictures | Release Date: 7/15/22 | Run Time: 125 Minut

Produced by Reese Witherspoon and based on the 2018 best-selling novel. A woman who raised herself in the marshes of the deep South becomes a suspect in the murder of a man she was once involved with.

Screening Notes

Nestled between the post-opening of Jurassic World, Lightyear, Minions and Thor and the opening of Paws of Fury, Nope, DC Super Pets and Bullet Train, Where the Crawdads Sing presents moviegoers with an excellent mid-summer counterprogramming option. Audiences will recognize a couple of familiar actors in supporting roles, but this film is driven by talented fresh faces, who bring the book to life and suck you right into this engaging and suspenseful romantic thriller. Albeit a bit dated reference, I found the film a cross between John Grisham’s, A Time To Kill (2004) and Nicholas Spark’s, The Notebook (1996).

Boxoffice Estimate

Current comps are bit tougher to come by…which in a way is a good thing since it means there hasn’t been a film quite like this in a while, offering audiences some earned temporary relief from “moviegoing monotony”. Without a doubt, the biggest driver of boxoffice success will be the 12 million worldwide readers of the novel, which has spent over 150 weeks on The New York Times Best Sellers List, topping that list for over 30 weeks.

Modeling lands at an opening weekend totaling $22M, with a range between $20M and $25M. I believe the relatively low opening weekend projection to be deceiving, as positive word-of-mouth should sustain the total multiple at an impressive 4.6x, meaning the film will have a nice long grind on its way to a total gross between $93 and $114M. Another solid base hit for the Industry...#datenight!
