Screening Notes

This is not your typical summer blockbuster. On paper, it sounds like it should be. A Cyclops. A nymph. An enchantress. Sea monsters. Gods and mortals battling across an epic journey home. It has all the ingredients of a giant action-packed popcorn adventure…and yes, the Cyclops does eat a few of Odysseus' men.

But don't walk into The Odyssey expecting a nonstop thrill ride. This is a film that requires attention and patience. Every scene matters. The first two hours are deliberate and methodical as the story and characters are developed. The final hour delivers. It’s powerful and will remind moviegoers why they need to watch it on the big screen.

Matt Damon anchors the film; Hathaway, Holland, and Pattinson provide strong contributions, but Damon definitely does the heavy lifting. This is everything would expect from a typical hardworking Christopher Nolan directed film.

Boxoffice Estimate

Audiences need to think more Gladiator than Clash of the Titans. The comparison isn't about the story; it's about the experience. Like Gladiator, this is a character-driven epic where the emotional journey matters as much as the spectacle.

The early audience excitement is undeniable. National Research Group (NRG) tracking has Odyssey entering release with moviegoer awareness at 79%...Michael and Project Hail Mary tallied 75 and 71, respectively. Awareness is also translating into urgency, with select IMAX screenings on sale in early June selling out in minutes…some of these tickets are appearing on secondary markets for hundreds—even as high as $1,500—per seat.

Taking all of the above into consideration, internal modeling suggests a $99M opening weekend, with a range between $89M and $109M, landing it around +28% greater than the average Christopher Nolan title. Positive word-of-mouth will help drive post-opening numbers, leading to an estimated 3.7x multiple and a domestic total in the $327M to $400M range.
