Screening Notes
I normally do NOT like these kinds of films but actually enjoyed this one. Although technically a horror film, the first two-thirds is really a fairly clever, slow-building thriller; the final third turns horror but in a “good” PG13 way…the horror of course being the vampires. The young, fresh-faced cast adds a modern-day cool factor. For fans of this genre, the script, cinematography, and acting are really pretty good. Buzz about this title is starting to build and if the marketing is on point, young adults could drive a reasonable end of summer gross…very thankful for the PG13 rating; an R-rating would have doomed us all.
Boxoffice Estimate
If you factor out the top 5 highs and lows for titles opening in Aug/Sep, on at least 2,000 screens since 2016, the 81 remaining films generated an average $15.7M opening weekend. Drilling down a bit further, the comps that line-up most closely with The Invitation have averaged ~50% less, at $7.7M. I believe the fate for this film lies somewhat in the middle with an expected opening weekend totaling $9.2M, and a range between $8.3M and $10.2M. The film should hold true with its comps, yielding a 2.6x multiple for a total gross between $21M and $26M. Another solid single base hit as we move into fall ball.
