Screening Notes
Distributed By: Universal | Release Date: 11/18/22 | Run Time: 128 Minutes
My two takeaways: (1) films like this must be made and (2) Harvey Weinstein is a pig and horrible embarrassment to my industry. The film is well-paced, with solid acting, and does a nice job unraveling the story, but I felt the dialogue fell short of representing the real-life reporters that investigated and broke the story…they are smart and articulate professionals which the script didn’t really reflect. Now, my comments are just personal ramblings, the real key is how moviegoers will react and drive boxoffice performance…
Boxoffice Estimate
The tragedy is, that while it’s important that films like this are made and tell the stories they do, the broad moviegoing audience simply doesn’t show up...Bombshell, Dark Waters, Just Mercy, On the Basis of Sex, Vice. Add to this the fact that R-rated dramas released in November since 2016 only average a $10M opening weekend (Hacksaw Ridge (’16) tops the list at $15M).
My projected opening weekend totals $8.3M, with a range between $7M and $9M. Although we are not going to be celebrating a huge opening, as word of mouth spreads, titles like this do tend to enjoy a long life in theatres, so 3.9x multiple should push the total gross to between$29M and $35M. A Single Base hit.
