Screening Notes
On the plus side, Jo Koy is really fun to watch…he has an infectious smile, an easy, confident manner, and is a good comedian; the Aug 5 release date and PG13 rating positions the film as the only non-animated family comedy in the market as we move to the end of summer. On the downside, Easter Sunday is simple humor, not offering a lot of depth, and fairly predictable.
Boxoffice Estimate
Two tactical advantages give this film hope. First, Joy Koy’s fan base; he has been a long-time regular on Chelsea Handler’s show, made some memorable appearances on Jimmy Fallon, will release his fourth Netflix comedy special in Sep’22 and has over 3 million Facebook followers. And second, the well-timed release date and family friendly PG13 rating.
Modeling lands at an opening weekend totaling $8.0M, with a range between $7.2M and $8.8M. I look for the film to sustain a 3.7x multiple on its way to a total gross between $26M and $33M. Continuing this summer’s baseball metaphor, the film may only be a single base hit…but it keeps the inning alive.
