Screening Notes
Brad Pitt is just fun to watch on screen. He tends to be equal parts funnyman and action hero, always delivering both with a signature “cool factor”. Bullet Train is filled with super fun characters and the violence, wit, humor, and plot reminded me of a Quentin Tarantino film…which are always very much R-rated. Audiences that enjoy Tarantino films, the John Wick franchise, Ryan Reynold’s Hitman’s Bodyguard, or Denzel Washington’s The Equalizer will love Bullet Train.
Fun fact: the film’s director, David Leitch, actually worked as Brad Pitt’s stunt double in Fight Club, Ocean’s Eleven, Troy and Mr. & Mrs. Smith!
Boxoffice Estimate
Bullet Train will need to work hard to get there, but it will succeed in being the last $100M film of the summer. The hard work relates back to (a) the Tarantino film comparison, which tend not to play to broad audiences (his last 4 titles have averaged a $28M opening), and (b) the violence behind the R-rating (since 2016, the top 10 R-rated, Action-Comedy titles, opening between Jun and Aug, have averaged a $27M opening weekend, going on to total $90M).
Modeling lands at an opening weekend totaling $30M, with a range between $27M and $33M. I look for the film to sustain a 3.6x multiple on its way to a total gross between $96 and $118M.
