Screening Notes
The movie is kinda one-dimensional…non-stop fighting, some humorous banter, along with smirks and sideways glances but The Rock is just a stoic character, somewhat lacking his bigger-than-life presence and signature humor and sarcasm, and his backstory is complex and takes a while to develop (think, Scorpion King). Similar to the Eternals, I fear audiences will find it hard to develop much of an attachment to or identify with the characters. The film won’t overly “WOW” moviegoers but sure won’t disappoint them either.
Boxoffice Estimate
Capturing moviegoer’s attention isn’t the intro of a new DC Universe superhero, it’s Dwayne Johnson playing a superhero…and no one is better and works harder at promoting a film than Johnson, who deftly leverages his 325M Instagram followers around the globe. Need proof…awareness and positive interest in this film is tracking almost off the chart.
Despite the notes above, Johnson’s star power and 24x7 herculean promotional efforts will result in this film “punching above its weight”, resulting in a larger gross than otherwise expected.
My projected opening weekend totals $61.3M, with a tight range between $55M and $68M...this is 37% higher than Johnson’s last 10 film average, but 35% lower than the last 6 Justice League films…it would also make this the 8th highest opening film of the year, behind Dr. Strange, Jurassic World, Thor, Batman, Top Gun, Minions and Sonic 2 (not bad a bad group to hang with). A 2.6x multiple should push the total gross to between $144M and $176M. A VERY solid Double Base hit.
