Thriller directed by Jordan Peele. Caretakers at a California horse ranch encounter a mysterious force that affects human and animal behavior. Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun

Screening Notes

With the release of Get Out (’17), Jordan Peele became the new “M. Night Shymalan”. Two years later he sealed the deal with Us (’19). Both films where uniquely clever, smart, scary-fun and refreshing thrillers, so with some really well-earned street cred, coupled with Nope’s great trailer, expectations were pretty-high. It pains me to report I was a little disappointed. Nope just doesn’t have the “cool factor” of Get Out or Us. The characters are great, and the initial build-up was clever and heading in the right direction, but the film was a bit of a letdown in the second half. The film reminded me that M. Night suffered that same fate, brilliantly moving from Sixth Sense to Unbreakable to Signs to The Village, then stumbling slightly, for the same reason, with The Happening.

Boxoffice Estimate

Adding financial context to being “a little disappointed”, instead of modeling a $75M opening weekend (in line with Us), my thinking now lands at an opening weekend totaling $56M, with a range between $50M and $60M, and a total gross between $135 and $165M. I was hoping for a triple base hit but will sure settle for this solid double!
