Screening Notes

Zootopia 2 checks every box: strong branding, excellent word-of-mouth potential, a wide audience target, and—most importantly—a clear path to own the holiday family market.  Last Thanksgiving delivered Moana 2, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Mufasa: The Lion King, creating a crowded family landscape. This year, Zootopia 2 stands alone until SpongeBob 2 arrives on Dec 19, giving it room to dominate family attendance for weeks. Audiences will enjoy the quick banter, comedy, and great animation.

Boxoffice Estimate

Disney has a long history of delivering premium animated titles over the Thanksgiving weekend, so history is on their side. National Research Group (NRG) tracking currently reflects a 90 Awareness score and a 15 First-Choice rating. Based on comps from over 300 recent releases, those numbers suggest an opening weekend in the $80M range…I would add a +20% bump to this number reflective of the holiday weekend.

Taking all of the above into consideration, internal modeling suggests a $96M opening weekend, with a range between $87M and $105M. Positive word-of-mouth, the pole holiday positioning, and the lack genre competition should carry the title from Thanksgiving thru New Year’s, delivering an estimated 4.1x multiple and a domestic total in the $352M to $431M range…ranking as Disney’s 2^nd highest Thanksgiving opening behind last year’s Moana 2.
