Screening Notes
Wicked is a B-I-G screen production in every sense of the word. The story, the imagery, the music --- it’s all so expansive and immersive that watching it anywhere other than a theatre would be foolish and a missed opportunity. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are mesmerizing and their chemistry so natural that it’s hard to imagine anyone else stepping into these roles…they will be forever known as Glinda and Elphaba. Wicked: For Good doesn’t miss a beat as it picks up where last year’s installment left off, matching its intensity and scale. So much fun from beginning to end.
Boxoffice Estimate
Wicked (’24) opened to $113M and earned 88% Critic and 95% Audience scores. Grinding out a hefty 4.2x multiple, the film went on to generate $473M..and even opening very late in the year, was the 3rd highest grossing film of 2024 behind Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine. Positioned at the top of the Thanksgiving weekend and still carrying the full buzz of Part 1, Wicked: For Good is a showcase title that should hold strong through the end of the year…assuming, of course, that unlike Part 1, it doesn’t drop on PVOD end of Dec, which would be impactful to grosses and disappointing to exhibitors.
Internal modeling suggests a $131M opening weekend, with a range between $118M and $144M. Positive word-of-mouth should carry the title beyond the opening weekend, delivering an estimated 3.9x multiple and a domestic total in the $464M to $567M range…roughly a +16% stronger opening and a +9% stronger total than Wicked (’24). For context, that projected opening weekend gross is 3.4x greater than the average PG title opening in Nov over the past 9 years.
