Screening Notes
The one-sheet says it all. Anytime you have an R-rated plot where Santa (yes, the actual jolly head guy himself) is battling a team of mercenaries, you know the film is going to be totally irreverent and include a healthy mix of profane, rude, tongue-in-cheek action and comedy. Put another way, imagine dropping the one-man-battling-a-group-of-villains of Die Hard, the antics of Home Alone, and the disillusioned and disgusting character in Bad Santa into a blender, you get a scruffy David Harbour in Violent Night. I kinda found it entertaining…please don’t judge me.
Boxoffice Estimate
Santa is the main character, but there is no mistaking this film for a wholesome, family-friendly holiday movie. The target audience for this film are males, particularly the 18-25 yr. old demo. As far as genre, the best recent comp title is likely Nobody (’21). There is no reason to believe this title will perform any differently than past R-rated action/adventure films released in December, which points to an opening weekend totaling $11.2M, with a range between $10M and $12M. The anticipated 3.5x, multiple also tracks with both the comparative and seasonal titles, pushing the total gross to between $35M and $43M. A solid Single Base Hit...that if hits the mark with moviegoers, has the potential to become a cult classic.
