Screening Notes

Anneesh Chaganty has nicely made the leap from directing Google commercials to feature films and, like his first film, Searching, cleverly tells the entire story through “screens” …computer screens, phone screens, security cameras, Youtube videos, etc. The storytelling technique could have easily been seen as way too gimmicky, but Chaganty executes it perfectly…not portraying the use of technology negatively and making the movie fun for the audience. The story itself is engaging with some nice twists and turns…this 31-year-old filmmaker delivers a refreshing cool-factor on a reported production budget of only ~$1.0M.

Boxoffice Estimate

While Feb and Mar look to be a very strong boost to Q1 grosses, Jan is still lumbering under the cloud of last year with 30% less content, which should give Missing some energy and moviegoers their first non-horror suspense film since Q3’22. Not surprising, the film is tracking well with young females but less so with an older demographic, partially due to a simple lack of awareness. Chaganty’s Searching went on to gross $26M, which may not appear to be much, unless you consider the fact it topped-out at only 2,000 screens. Missing is anticipated to only open on ~2,500 screens, which in my mind will suppress the gross…with the dearth of content (exhibitors and moviegoers are both scrambling for content), the uniqueness of this very commercial story (and storytelling), and the clear sailing on the release schedule for two weeks post-opening, I feel the film’s release is under-screened. The result, an opening weekend totaling $8.2M, with a range between $7M and $9M.

The anticipated 3.0x opening weekend multiple is in line with both the Comparative titles and a typical January release, leading to a total gross estimate of between $22M and $27M.
