Adventure. Zora Bennett leads a team of skilled operatives to the most dangerous place on Earth, an island research facility for the original Jurassic Park. Screening Notes
Dinosaurs are big, fierce, and extinct, which makes them safe to watch. Jurassic films have been a cornerstone of summer moviegoing for 32 years and Jurassic Rebirth is a smart transition from the Chris Pratt era that feels both familiar, with subtle nods to past films, and forward-looking for the franchise. Johansson is a VERY capable action star --- who didn’t love her as Natalia Alianovna Romanova (aka, the Black Widow) in the Avengers films. And then there are the real stars of the movie, the dinosaurs, who are back with less “theme park” and more primal terror! This is the kind of summer movie blockbuster moviegoers expect.
Boxoffice Estimate
Looking back, the original Jurassic Park (’93) opened to $50M...$112M in today’s dollars --- and it only opened on 2,400 screens! Adjusting all 6 films in the franchise forward to today’s dollars yields an impressive $163M average opening weekend. The Jurassic franchise continues to perform and despite all the fireworks displays and parties, July 4th holiday is a super weekend to open big titles...Spiderman: Homecoming ($117M), Minions: Rise of Gru ($107M), Transformers: Dark Moon ($98M).
Modeling suggests an $88M opening weekend, with tracking in the $80M and $97M range. Jurassic Rebirth has been given a wide berth and is the only title opening WB 7/4 but will quickly have some strong competition in the market the following week when Superman (7/11) hits screens. With an estimated 3.2x multiple, projections land the film’s domestic total in the $255M to $311M range. If those numbers hold, the opening will rank as the 5th highest July 4th gross and outperform the average July PG13 opening by +86%.
