Screening Notes
Big Bold Beautiful Journey isn’t quite the romantic comedy its trailer suggests. Yes, there’s romance and, yes, there is humor, but the film goes quite a bit deeper and less about “will they or won’t they” of a simple rom/com plot and more about what it means to be in a meaningful relationship. One of the things that struck me most was how much the film plays like a stage production—dialogue-heavy, carefully staged scenes, and performances that invite the audience to lean in and listen rather than sit back and coast like most rom/coms…not a bad thing at all, just unexpected. In short, this isn’t a movie for audiences chasing big laughs or flashy set pieces, but for moviegoers — particularly adults 30+ who gravitate toward dramas, book adaptations, and love stage plays — it’s a very rewarding experience. [the R-rating is for language only…the result of few F-bombs]
Boxoffice Estimate
Although this is Margot Robbie’s first outing since the hyper-successful Barbie, the film will likely not have huge broad market draw but will play very well with 30+ adults who like character-driven dramas…grosses will definitely get a nice boost by positive word-of-mouth and there just may be the possibility of some award season buzz down the road.
National Research Group (NRG) tracking currently reflects a 45 Awareness score and a 4 First-Choice rating. Based on comps from over 300 recent releases, those numbers suggest an opening weekend in the $10M to $15M range. I do expect the film to earn very favorable Critic and Audience Scores.
My modeling suggests a $12M opening weekend, with a range between $10M and $13M; an estimated 2.9x multiple, should land the film’s domestic total in the $31M to $38M range.
