Adventure. Reclusive author writes best-selling novels about a secret agent who's on a mission to unravel a global spy syndicate. When the plots of her books start to mirror real-life spy organization, the line between fiction and reality begins to blur..... Bryce Dallas, Sam Rockwell, Henry Cavill, John Cena, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Samuel L. Jackson
Screening Notes
Quirky and clever adventure romp in the spirit of Lost City (’23), Stanger than Fiction (’06), and Romancing the Stone (’84), but with many more twists and turns. Super cast…I always find Bryan Cranston and Sam Rockwell to be a treat: charming, confident, and relatable. The 139 minute runtime could have used some trimming, and the cinematography works just a smidge too hard trying to be stylish. Overall, an entertaining film…and thankfully, with a PG13 rating.
Boxoffice Estimate
The WB 2/2 opening can’t arrive soon enough to give grosses a badly needed boost and provides plenty of post-open breathing room through most of Feb.
Depending on the title, Feb (even with the icy-cold and the Super Bowl) can produce a gross…Black Panther opened to $202M. However, titles opening in Feb over the past 8 years have averaged $23M; PG13 titles have averaged $20M, which is coincidently the same average as the recent set of Comp titles. My analysis points to an opening weekend estimated at $24M (20% greater than the average), with a range between $22M and $27M. The expected 3.3x multiple is in line with both Feb historicals and the Comp titles and should produce a final gross between $72M and $88M. By the way, Lost City totaled at $105M, Stranger than Fiction and Romancing the Stone totaled at an inflation-adjusted gross of $61M and $221M, respectively.
